One Saturday Kell turned up for tennis wearing a very smart pair of dark glasses that he said he had been awarded that week when flying with the Red Arrows. Naturally we were pretty impressed and, being a bright day, he kept them on for his tennis.

After half an hour Kell still hadn't made contact with the ball. Ruefully he took them off and pronounced that the glasses could only work at 50,000 feet. Newport at 900 feet above sea level was simply much too low!
